Rants & Raves

Is it just Chicago or are other Midwest Markets weak in terms of Big Ten radio coverage?

I live in Chicago and we are fortunate to have 2 sports radio stations, WMVP AM 1000 who is the ESPN outlet and WSCR 670 the Score, its irreverent counterpart. ESPN 1000 does a decent job of covering college football on Saturdays but Monday-Friday even the local talk hosts almost ignore the Big Ten.

The Score on numerous occasions has said "Chicago isn't (or ain't depending on the Host) a college sports town.

Are they kidding? Go visit any watering hole on Saturday in the fall and you will trip over the alumni and other fans of most Big Ten schools. Take a look in any parking lot and you'll run across license plate holders showing allegiance  to Michigan, Purdue, Illinois, Northwestern and even Penn State.

Fortunately  the newspapers do a pretty job covering the conference and it's teams. Here are links to recent stories about the Big Ten Network as an example.

I've spent time in a lot of other midwest cities including Detroit, Milwaukee etc and their radio seems to find time to cover the local Big Ten teams and a bit of the conference am I wrong?
